Int. Journal of Design Engineering (IJDE) - Design in Nature: Call For Papers

Humans have always faced technical challenges. In seeking solutions, human engineering has often looked to natural surroundings for inspiration, or at times for mimicry, of viable analogues. Successful adaptation of natural solutions to human-engineered systems has often led to significant enhancement to the quality of human life and further consolidated mastery of the environment. Perhaps the earliest example is when primitive man, inspired by the awesome power of fire, discovered how to make it then harnessed its potential. Mastery of fire enabled humans to delve into the use of metals and to eventually establish the foundation of a manufacturing-based civilization.

Bionik-Wirtschaftsforum

Principles and Development of Bio-Inspired Materials

COST: Principles and Development of Bio-Inspired Materials

Bio-inspired materials are becoming of increasing interest in many fields of practical applications. In contrast to man-made materials natural materials such as wood, bone and shells are composed of only limited number of basic components. They gain their diversity in mechanical properties by hierarchical structuring which allows them to fulfil a variety of functions e.g. self-healing, mechanical stability, high toughness.

Location: Vienna, Austria
Date: 13 - 15 April 2010

Due to the quickly advancing physical characterisation techniques our knowledge of the hierarchical structures has increased significantly in recent years and the secrets of form-function relationships are slowly unveiled. But combining the knowledge of natural materials with modern techniques of simulation and fabrication is still the exception due to the lack of communication between bio- and material scientists.

This Strategic Workshop funded by the COST Office aims to be the direct interface between the biological and the processing side to unfold the full potential of bio-inspired materials.

The workshop will provide a forum to stimulate interactions between relevant disciplines including biology, materials science, biomimetics, engineering and physics. It will be organised along three main themes:

* Material Design Strategies of Nature
* Implementation of Biological Concepts (Abstraction and Translation)
* Applications.

Design and Nature 2010 - Call for Papers

Fifth International Conference on Comparing Design in Nature with Science and Engineering in Pisa, Italy

The Design and Nature Conference is to be reconvened in 2010 following the success of previous meetings, the first of which was held in Udine, Italy in 2002, followed by the second in Rhodes, Greece in 2004, a third in the New Forest, UK, in 2006, and the last one in the Algarve, Portugal in 2008.

Throughout history, many leading thinkers have been inspired by the parallels between nature and human design, in mathematics, engineering and other areas.Today, the huge increase in biological knowledge, developments in design engineering systems, together with the growth in computer power and the developments in simulation modelling, have all made more comprehensive studies of nature possible.
