| Technology is
increasingly acquiring organic features, and it is facing a growing
number of problems which can be encountered in the same or similar
forms in the living world. Biological evolution has already created a
wealth of fascinating high-tech solutions. A proper understanding of
these can open up new possibilities for technology or help to find
shortcuts in engineering processes and research. BIONIK is concerned with decoding "inventions" made by living organisms and transferring them into innovative engineering techniques. But nature does not supply any blueprints which can simply be copied. Findings from functional biology have to be "translated" into the materials and dimensions applicable in practical engineering. And this requires interdisciplinary cooperation. |
