Foundation
The registered society Bionics Competence Network e. V. (or BIOKON) was founded on April, 23rd, 2004. It is registered at the district court of Charlottenburg, Berlin, as number 23384Nz. You can find the society's rules here (in German)PDF.
The managing board consists of five elected members with one coordinator and his or her representative: The BIOKON e. V. organizes and coordinates all major activities of the whole network. It has been designated as a coordinating body in the cooperation contract of the members of the collaborative initiative »Bionics Competence Network BIOKON, phase 2« by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The society is to provide a solid and sustainable infrastructure for bionics in Germany and is to lead the collaborative initiative to a successful conclusion. The BIOKON e. V. is responsible for the collaboration and the technical coordination between the network and the project executing organization or the BMBF. The BIOKON e. V. is itself member of the competence network.

Purpose and goals of the society
The society is an association of experts and institutions with proven competence in the field of bionics, that are actively contributing to the further development of this scientific discipline and its applications in research, education, business and industry, politics and culture. Additionally, members can be interested individuals, who effectively support the ideas of bionics and the society in its various tasks. The society follows exclusively and only charitable purposes on a national and international stage by furthering the cooperation in science and research, education, and on environmental issues (»sustainable developments«). These intentions of the rules can be realized by:
  • Nationwide initiatives and measurements for the integrative networking of biological, ecotechnological, and engineering research, the formation of transdisciplinary work groups, a systematic analysis of the national and international state-of-the-art, the carrying out of trend analyses, a competent counseling of governmental departments, funding institutions, foundations, and other responsible bodies, investors, and decision-makers, the initiation of thematic focal points for funding and concrete research, and development projects with bionic content, rendering expert opinions.
  • Supervising and conducting research and development projects in the field of bionics and furthering the transfer of bionic research results in economic and environmental engineering applications.
  • Publication of research results of state-aided projects of BIOKON.
  • Organization of scientific events, fairs, and exhibitions.
  • Organizing and carrying out continued learning and on-the-job-trainings in the field of bionics.
  • Promotion the integration of transdisciplinary work, think approaches, and bionic teaching in educational programs for primary, secondary, and tertiary education, and in institutions which provide opportunities for vocational training.
  • General education via public lectures and plenums as well as the publication of information and teaching material on bionics.
  • Informing the public about current progresses in bionics in the media and via the Internet.

Membership
Applicable for a membership are:
  • Natural persons, who are dedicated in particular to issues of bionic science and its practical application as well the preparation and distribution of relevant ideas and concepts, thus supporting the goals of the society.
  • Institutions and companies, which are interested in the furthering and support of the aims of the society and which participate in particular in the planning and in carrying out collaborative projects of the society.
  • Societies and organizations which support the purposes of the society
  • Scientific institutions, which are active in the field of bionics
  • Other individuals, or groups of people, or institutions can become members as »supporting members« without the right to vote.
The membership is acquired through a written application. The managing board decides on whether or not to accept a membership application. The membership begins with the decision to accept the membership by the managing board. The members pay a yearly fee (in German)PDF. Natural persons can be appointed honorary members by suggestion of the managing board, if they have acquired special merits for the advancement of the society's aims. They have the same rights as ordinary members, however, they are preempted from the yearly fee.
